Reviews for “The Parking Lot Rapist”

“Good day sir! I just got my copy and I am half way through it. For years, I have tried to find more information about this case, but there wasn’t much available.
You see this is an unexpected personal experience for me. My parents in their early 20s were neighbors to Kenneth on Paula St in Fullerton. (They moved in 1975 right before he was caught) I grew up hearing stories about him. Stories that seemed too shocking to be real. My dad talked about doing yard work with him and then sharing a beer. I think my parents both agreed he was a bit off but also doing the neighborly thing.
My mom who fit the same descriptions as his some of his victims would receive obscene phone calls after my dad who worked nights would go to work. She’s convinced now that it was 100% him. My dad has mentioned at one point helping helping Ruby do something in the house. (she didnt want to go in alone) I appreciate you releasing the book. I am excited to finish it.
For me, it isn’t just a true crime read it is a glimpse into history that had always felt like an eerie family legend. ” What’s something unique about your family? Oh, they were neighbors to a serial killer and rapist in the 70s” I wish there was a documentary on this case.”

“Lee DeVore’s firsthand account of the investigation, capture, and prosecution of a serial predator in Southern California during the 1970’s drew me in and would not let go. It is a powerful true story of a police department’s commitment to protecting a community and bringing justice on behalf of victims.
The extensive jailhouse confessions and documentation of courtroom proceedings will keep you turning pages as you discover the dark and twisted mind of a brutal criminal and the outstanding police work that resulted in his eventual downfall.
Highly recommended read!”

“I couldn’t put this book down and learned so much information that I was never aware of during the investigation of this case. I have consulted with over two hundred police agencies in my career, and this is one of the best documented case studies that I’ve ever read. This isn’t some television “yarn”. It’s a description of how real cases get solved by real, hard-working people.
I heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how real major crimes get solved.”

“The monster you’ve written about changed every one of our lives in one way or another – mostly not for the good.
I just wanted to drop you an email and thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’ve been looking for Hulbert’s obituary for decades with no success. I even wrote to the newspaper asking the author of an article if he could tell me anything about his death. I never believed that he was really dead until now. I always thought he seemed like a guy who was able to wiggle his way out of a lot. Sorry to say I was disappointed to find out I was correct.
Again, thank you for writing this book. It’s given me a lot of closure and though difficult to read the details were of value to me mentally. The truth. You wrote with sensitivity and kindness and that kindness nearly came through the page.”

“I just read your book, and it was wonderful. I have been a criminal defense attorney in OC for 21+ years, and my mother a Child Abuse attorney for 30 years before me so it was fun to recognize a lot of names and places. Thank you for bringing this forgotten story to print and for all your hard work and dedication to justice throughout your career.”

Facinating in-depth true story from police, victim and murderer-rapist perspectives.

“Mr. Devore, my dad (John Goulet) had your book on his table when I went to visit him and my mom recently. He told me I could read his, but I ordered my own copy. I enjoyed having some conversation that day with him about some of his recollection of this time in his career. I currently work at our local Sheriff’s office closely with our Sherif and our chief Deputy, who is also a retired AR State Trooper and lead investigator for the State.
I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your book. I was so impressed at the thoroughness of every aspect of the investigation especially since technology was so different from what we have today. I told the Sheriff and Chief that I would let them read it as well.”

“Reading The Parking Lot Rapist by Lee Devore was an unexpectedly personal experience for me. My parents were neighbors to this serial rapist /murder before I was born. I grew up hearing stories about him—stories that always seemed too shocking to be real. For years, I tried to find more information about the case, but there wasn’t much available. Then, nearly 50 years later, this book finally gave me the full picture.
Devore does an incredible job piecing together the details of the crimes and the investigation, making the story both disturbing and fascinating. For me, it wasn’t just a true crime read—it was a glimpse into a history that had always felt like an eerie family legend. Seeing the facts laid out, the terror he caused, and how justice finally caught up with him made the book all the more impactful.
If you’re a fan of true crime, this book delivers in-depth research and compelling storytelling. But for me, it was more than just a book—it was in a way closure.”

“If you enjoy true crime books and TV shows like American Detective with Joe Kenda, you will love this book. Written by the supervising detective on the case, this story shows the amazing work of Lee DeVore and his team and how they found the rapist/murderer and built the case to prosecute him. Filled with actual interview transcripts and comments from the detectives. Amazing insight into not only the investigation but how the case affected the detectives and how they interacted with the victims over the years. An amazing first book. I sure hope there are more to come!”
